Welcome to Riverside Theatre Works, a non-profit performing arts center with a mission of providing affordable arts education and to producing quality productions that touch your heart and soul.
The script of our story is 25 years young and includes being voted Best Theatre in Boston 2006 by CBS Channel 4, creating highly talented outreach troupes—Mixed Emotions and Stages of Discovery—and recently being listed in the latest edition of the Catalogue for Philanthropy.
This past year, 700 youth were educated in the arts and over 10,000 patrons were entertained. We reach many thousands more with our outreach programs.
About Our House
We are currently in French’s Opera House, which was built in 1897 by Leroy J. French. The Hyde Park Gazette described him as one of the town's "most progressive and enterprising business men." In the early years, the House featured a variety of productions, most of which were vaudevillian; including minstrel shows, dramatic recitations, comedies and operettas, and a range of acts that defy description. This entire block of buildings was destroyed by fire in 1899. It was soon rebuilt and operated for years as an entertainment venue. From 1916 until 1977, the theater was used as the Masonic Temple of Hyde Park and Masonic Hall.
Riverside Theatre Works has been renting this space since the early 1980’s.
A Vision for Our Future
We are planning for our next 25 years and searching for a new building in Hyde Park. We need a new home that is handicapped accessible, provides adequate space for concerts and events by outside organizations, and room for more programs (i.e. for seniors, Mommy & Me, Drama and Art Therapy)
